Asimbonanga lyrics with English translation. #Madiba #Clegg #Mandela

Image
This pic was taken in September in studio with, from left: Suga, Johnny Clegg, Keri Miller (me) and Nick Feinberg.
Johnny had come in for an interview on our show. #Drive326 on Heart 104.9FM
This song is magnificent, and has gained so much exposure again since Madiba’s passing and the beautiful flashmob done by the Soweto Gospel Choir. (click here to see the vid if you haven’t yet. It’s a tear jerker)
Many of us would like to sing along, and more than that, like to understand it.
Yes, I am an isiZulu teacher, but I did not translate this, I merely searched it and pasted.
I hope you enjoy singing along 🙂
Asimbonanga – Johnny Clegg & Savuka
Album: Best of Live: At the Nelson Mandela Theatre

Asimbonanga (We have not seen him)
Asimbonang’ uMandela thina (We have not seen Mandela)
Laph’ekhona (In the place where he is)
Laph’ehleli khona (In the place where he is kept)

Oh the sea is cold and the sky is grey
Look across the Island into the Bay
We are all islands till comes the day
We cross the burning water

Chorus….

A seagull wings across the sea
Broken silence is what I dream
Who has the words to close the distance
Between you and me

Chorus….

Steve Biko, Victoria Mxenge
Neil Aggett
Asimbonanga
Asimbonang ‘umfowethu thina (we have not seen our brother)
Laph’ekhona (In the place where he is)
Laph’wafela khona (In the place where he died)
Hey wena (Hey you!)
Hey wena nawe (Hey you and you as well)
Siyofika nini la’ siyakhona (When will we arrive at our destination)

Below is a video of the song live with Madiba. Increible. Enjoy
